I’ve always loved evening routines–sleeping is one of my favorite things, so getting ready for sleep is always fun. Evening routines probably don’t get talked about as much as morning routines, but they are certainly just as important. I’ve recently changed up my evening routine and found that following a routine not only helps me get ready for sleep physically, but also singles to my brain that it is time for a good night’s sleep.
Cleaning my Body
I’m not a huge fan of night-time showers, but there is rarely time in the morning no matter how early I get up. So evening showers it is. I try to make them fun by burning a favorite candle, doing a face mask or scrub and generally doing a bit of extra pampering.
Another single to my body that it is time to start shutting my brain down is taking out my contacts and putting on my glasses. Simple, but effective!
After that I might do something relaxing. Some of my favorite choices are:
- Reading
- Writing in a journal
- Coloring
- Sometimes watching TV.
Actually getting in bed
I do the usual brush my teeth and comb my hair, but before I turn out the light and climb into bed I set up my essential oil diffuser. I fill it with water and put a few drops of essential oils in. It helps me to relax and calm my brain down. My favorite oil blend is Chill Zone by Lemongrass Spa. It is the perfect mix of citrus and lavender plus it has Clary sage in it which is amazing for going to sleep. When I don’t have that handy blend around I will do my own blend of some Clary sage, lavender, tangerine or sweet orange and sometimes some geranium.
Soft pj’s are always important as are my favorite pillows. An eye mask is a must too–too much light keeps me awake! Sometimes ear plugs are a necessary addition–my husband frequently and loudly snores. Before drifting off I often like to listen to an audio book. I am careful about my choice because anything exciting will keep me awake. I have my favorite books on repeat. Remember that comfort blanket or stuffed animal you always had for bedtime? These books are the adult equivalent of that! Favorites include D. E. Stevenson’s Katherine Wentworth and Katherine’s Marriage and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.
What about you? What’s your favorite bedtime routine? Do you have something you look forward to doing every night?
